Colombian Heroes in Korea

Colombia was the only Latin American country that sent troops to the Korean War, a conflict that took place between 1950 and 1953.

In response to the UN's call, Colombia deployed an infantry battalion of approximately 4,700 men and three frigates. This decision, made during the administration of President Laureano Gómez, demonstrated Colombia's commitment to peace and global stability.

Contributions and Sacrifices

Colombian soldiers played a crucial role in several major battles. One of the most notable was the Battle of Old Baldy, where Colombian troops demonstrated great courage and resilience against Chinese forces. They also participated in the Battle of Kumsong, one of the last major offensives of the war, where they again displayed their skill and determination. Throughout the conflict, 196 Colombians lost their lives and more than 400 were wounded. Despite initial criticism, the valor and dedication of these soldiers were recognized in both South Korea and Colombia, where their legacy lives on.

Colombia's Military Strategy

Colombia's military strategy in the Korean War focused on defense and support for the Allied forces. The Colombian Battalion was integrated into the U.S. Army's 24th Infantry Division, participating in both defensive and counterattack operations. The Colombians distinguished themselves through their ability to adapt quickly to terrain conditions and their skill in close-quarters combat. Additionally, Colombian frigates conducted patrols and naval support operations, contributing to maritime security and the supply of resources.

Legacy and Recognition

Today, Colombia's participation in the Korean War is remembered with respect and gratitude. Monuments and commemorative ceremonies in South Korea honor Colombian veterans, and support programs continue to benefit their families. This chapter in Colombia's military history is a testament to the courage and solidarity of its armed forces.
